Living without a car in Asturias is possible, but not everywhere with the same level of comfort. The key is not only whether public transport exists, but whether frequency, timetables and everyday services fit your routine.
The easiest options are usually Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés. They are compact cities, with neighbourhoods where you can walk to supermarkets, health centres, schools, shops, stations and administrative services.
Some well-connected central-area towns can also work, such as Lugones, La Felguera, Sama, Mieres, Pola de Siero or specific locations with frequent train and bus services. In these cases, check the exact address, not only the municipality.
In coastal or inland towns, you can live with less car use if the home is inside the main town and close to services. The situation changes a lot if the house is in a rural parish, an isolated residential area or a small village.
To check whether an area works without a car, look at five things: walking distance to a supermarket, health centre, connection to a hospital, transport to work or studies and weekend alternatives.
Public transport may be enough for everyday life, but some occasional trips may require a taxi, car sharing or car rental. This is not necessarily a problem, but it is worth calculating in advance.
If you do not want to depend on a car, prioritise housing inside an urban centre, with pavements, lighting, nearby shops and a real train or bus connection.
