Living in Asturias with children: schools, healthcare and daily routine

Guide for families thinking about moving to Asturias and comparing schools, paediatric care, school transport and everyday life.

Moving to Asturias with children changes how you choose a municipality. It is not enough for an area to be beautiful or to have attractive housing: the important thing is whether everyday life works well throughout the year.

Before choosing a home, check the assigned school, the reference secondary school, school transport, cafeteria service, after-school activities and real winter travel times.

In cities such as Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés there is a wider range of schools, healthcare services and activities. There are also more neighbourhoods to choose from, with important differences in price, parking, noise and access to green areas.

In central-area municipalities such as Siero, Llanera or Mieres, you may find a balance between services, somewhat larger housing and good connections. It is important to look closely at the exact town or neighbourhood, because car dependency can vary a lot within the same municipality.

In coastal or inland towns, family life can be quieter and more local, but you should check the distance to secondary school, paediatric care, emergency services, activities and public transport.

If you are looking at a rural house or a small village, logistics are usually the key issue: school drop-off and pick-up, timetables, winter roads, mobile coverage, fibre internet, damp in the property and distance to basic services.

The best area for living with children is not always the cheapest or the most spectacular. It is the one that supports a comfortable routine: school, work, shopping, healthcare, activities and rest.
